Southampton looking to strike deadline day deal for Paul Onuachu

Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Southampton have not given up in their pursuit of Genk’s leading scorer Paul Onuachu. The Belgian league leaders had rejected an offer from Southampton already this window, but it appears that the Saints will return on deadline day in one last effort to bring the Nigerian striker to the Premier League.

Genk and the player have always had an agreement that any offer from a Premier League club would be taken seriously, and at the age of 28 it is clear that the player is running out of time to get his move.

Onuachu is the league top scorer with 16 goals from 19 games. He is also the record holder for the most goals in a single Belgian Pro League season. During the 2020/2021 season he scored 33 goals in 38 games. It was expected that the former Midtjylland striker would leave in the summer following the 2020/2021 season, however he has remained with Genk.

Onuachu has also been capped 13 times by the Nigerian national side, scoring three times for the Super Eagles.

Genk have been active in bringing players in during the winter window. So far they have signed Anouar Ait El Hadj,  Yira Sor and Alfred Caicedo.
