John Textor’s summer gamble backfiring as RWDM sink closer towards the drop

Over the summer, John Textor made two power moves at RWDM. He took over as the President of the club and fired head coach Vincent Euvrard, replacing him with Cláudio Caçapa. Desipte having won the side promotion the season before, Euvrard was gone just a few weeks before the Pro League season began. The side have only won five games this season, all of which came under Caçapa, but the most recent of these wins was back in December.

Fans were unhappy with Textor at the time, and as season has taken a dramatic turn for the worst in recent weeks, there will be even more pressure. This calendar year, RWDM have picked up just two points from a possible 27. It is of little surprise that they now find themselves second bottom of the league. Caçapa has since been sacked, with Bruno Irles brought in, yet this has made little difference. Irles has only managed to grab one point in his four games, a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers OH Leuven. They also lost to bottom of the table Kortrijk.

In their recent 3-0 defeat to Anderlecht, the coach admitted that both he and the players were not really up for the derby. It certainly showed, as the purple side of Brussels were able to easily secure the three points within the first half. With one game to go before the relegation play-offs begin, RWDM are in complete free fall. Should their return to the Pro League only last one season, expect fans to turn on Textor once again over the summer.
