Nigerian striker downs Union St Gilloise to open up the title race

There is now well and truly a title race in Belgium after Genk’s 1-0 win over Union St Gilloise on Sunday evening. Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare struck in the 27th minute to grab the only goal of the game. The home side should have been two up at half-time, but defender Joris Kayembe somehow missed from a few yards out. Union pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way passed the Genk defence. With the game winding down, former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess was shown a straight red card when his throw in struck Arokodare from close range. It seemed a harsh red card for the defender.

With this defeat, the halving of points from the regular season means that Union are now level on points with Anderlecht in the Champions play-offs. Anderlecht beat 10-men Antwerp 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Mauves will travel to Club Brugge next weekend, while Union welcome the other Brugge side in Cercle to Brussels. Having missed out on the title via the play-offs for the past two years, fans will certainly hope that the result against Genk is a minor blip in what has so far been a dominant season.
