Important summer decision looming for Standard Liege’s on loan Brighton midfielder

In the summer, Steven Alzate’s contract at Brighton will be up. The midfielder signed a new deal with the side back in 2020 that ran until 2024. Yet in that time, he has struggled to break into the first team. His last Premier League appearance for the side came back in the 2021/2022 season, with the last two having been spent on loan at Standard Liege. Over the summer, Alzate was one of the Belgian sides number one targets, having impressed under Ronny Deila last season. In 27 league games for the club he scored three goals and provided five assists.

So far this season, despite the sides struggles Alzate has been able to show his class. In 20 games across all competitions he has one goal and four assists. He has almost played as many games (49) for Standard as he has done for Brighton (51). Standard would surely love to bring him back again next season, but finances have been an issue for the club lately, with owners 777 under a lot of pressure from the fans for how they have managed the situation.

At the age of just 25, Alzate will surely not be short of suitors. The London born midfielder has also been capped at international level by Colombia. If Standard fail to strike a deal, there will be other clubs in Belgium with the financial ability to sign Alzate that may try and keep him in the Pro League.
