Ex-Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante purchases Belgian third division side Royal Excelsior Virton

Royal Excelsior Virton have confirmed that the club has been purchased by World Cup winning midfielder N’Golo Kante. The French midfielder has taken over the club from Flavio Becca, who was responsible for saving them back in 2018. Last year, Virton were relegated from the Belgian second tier to the first Amateur division.

Kante himself has now moved to Saudi Arabia to play, where the reported wages he will be earning will certainly be enough to help run Virton. On the club website, the statement reads that the aim is to work within the local area to develop talent via the academy, which will then graduate to the first team. There are plenty of Belgian sides who use this model as a means to survive, selling their young talents for profit that then sustains the club.

Plenty of eyes will be on Virton this season to see if they can bounce back from relegation under the ownership of the former Leicester and Chelsea man.
