Former Middlesborough striker still shining at the age of 34 for Zulte Waregem

After relegation to the Challenger Pro League last season, many speculated as to what some of the veteran Zulte Waregem players would decide to do. One of these was former Middlesborough striker Jelle Vossen. The now 34-year-old, who also had a very brief two month spell with Burnley, scored nine goals for the side during their disastrous 2022/2023 season. After relegation was confirmed, the veteran striker announced he would remain at the club until the summer of 2025.

Zutle Waregem fans will certainly be happy that he did. So far this season Vossen has maintained his incredible scoring record in Belgium. Of his 213 career goals, only nine have come for non Belgian sides, all of which were for Middlesborough during his one season loan spell with the side. So far this season, the 34-year-old has already scored seven goals in 14 league games. Thanks to his partnership with Guinea-Bissau international Zinho Gano, who has eight goals, Zulte Waregem are top of the league.

This season the top two in the Challenger Pro League are automatically promoted. Beerschot sit second, level with Zulte Waregem on 29 points. Both sides have opened a three point gap to third and fourth place Deinze and Dender respectively. Having the experience and quality of Vossen will likely play a key role in deciding whether or not Zulte Waregem can bounce straight back to the Belgian Pro League.
