Former Ajax and Sevilla forward Quincy Promes denies stabbing his cousin

Quincy Promes has denied that he stabbed his cousin and he therefore does not want to pay the compensation for which he was already sentenced in a civil procedure, Het Parool reports. Promes, who currently plays for Russian side Spartak Moscow, is said to have stabbed his cousin in the knee during a family party in the summer of 2020.

In June this year the 50-time Netherlands international was set to face one-and-a-half years in prison, but on Monday the court in Amsterdam dealt with the matter of compensation. Quincy Promes, 31, himself was not present in court, but his lawyers dealt with the case. Emotions reportedly ran high as Promes’ cousin revealed that he can ‘hardly go outside’ and is ‘socially isolated’ due to the situation. The stabbing also caused permanent damage to his leg.

‘Promes is used to the attention, not me, I didn’t ask for anything. I just get abuse thrown at me, as if I’m lying, as if I want to break his career,’ the cousin of Quincy Promes said. Promes’ lawyers even questioned whether the photos of the injuries were real, to which his cousin responded by shouting angrily across the courtroom: ‘Do you want to see it?’

The court will rule on the 16th of January whether Promes will have to pay compensation. Promes has been playing for Spartak Moscow since 2021, having previously spent four seasons with them between 2014 and 2018. In Russia, the former Ajax and Sevilla winger is virtually inaccessible to justice. In addition to his involvement in the stabbing, Promes was also recently charged with importing over 1,300 kilos of cocaine, which were intercepted in the port of Antwerp, Belgium in 2020.
