Cambuur relegated from the Eredivisie following 3-0 defeat to Utrecht

Cambuur Leeuwarden have officially been relegated from the Eredivisie after suffering a 3-0 defeat at home to FC Utrecht on Saturday. Sjors Ultee’s side have lost their last seven games in a row and sit rock bottom of the league on just 16 points.

Saturday evening’s game against 7th place Utrecht looked like an incredibly tough task for a side that had conceded 23 goals in their previous eight games. By half-time, Utrecht were already 2-0 up, with Cambuur needing a victory to have any chance at staying up. Sander van de Streek opened the scoring before Tasos Douvikas doubled the lead. Douvikas put the game to bed in the second half, scoring from the penalty spot just after the hour mark.

Cambuur will return to the Eerste Divisie next season, having last been in the second tier in the 2020/21 season when they won the title. Last season Cambuur finished 9th in the Eredivisie, their highest-ever first-tier finish. After a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, they’ll return to the league in which they’ve spent five of the last 10 seasons playing in.

Despite the displeasure in the Cambuur camp, they still have three Eredivisie games remaining. Next weekend they take on Vitesse away from home, followed by a trip to play Sparta Rotterdam and a home game against Waalwijk.
