Belgian national team considered boycotting World Cup

The Belgian national team considered boycotting the World Cup in Qatar due to the controversies surrounding the tournament, the Belgian FA’s HR director has confirmed.

Since the tournament was awarded to Qatar, many have called for nations to boycott due to issues relating to human rights and bribery.

It is widely accepted that FIFA chose to host the World Cup there for financial reasons, while the treatment and deaths of workers that worked on the construction of the stadiums has caused a huge amount of controversy.

While Belgium will play in Qatar, the FA’s HR director says a boycott was considered.

“We asked ourselves whether there should be a boycott. This was considered,” they told RTL.

Nevertheless, the team will apparently address the issues during the tournament and are deciding how to do so.

“It’s up to the players to decide,” the director added.

“We are working on it and a decision will be made next week, we will communicate about the actions they want to take. But there will be visible actions.”
