PSV board set to sack sporting director for not selling Cody Gakpo

The PSV supervisory board want to sack sporting director John de Jong, largely for his failure to sell Cody Gakpo in the transfer window.

There was interest in Gakpo throughout the summer, and it ramped up in the final few days of the window with Leeds and Southampton making offers that were initially rejected, being deemed too low.

According to Voetbal International, the supervisory board contacted De Jong and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who wanted to keep the winger at the club, on deadline day telling them to sell the player due to the budget deficit the club had.

By the time offers had finally been accepted though, Gakpo felt there wasn’t enough time to make a decision about his future and thus decided to stay at PSV.

It looks like De Jong will pay dearly for his failure to do as instructed, with VI and Eindhovens Dagblad both reporting that he’s set to be fired.

The Gakpo saga is a big factor in the decision but not the only one, with the board also unhappy with the sporting progress the club has made over the last few years.

As for a replacement, they’d like to bring Frank Arnesen back to the club. He worked there from 1994 to 2004 and recently left Feyenoord.
