Antwerp challenge ‘home-grown’ UEFA rule as contradicting EU law

A press release from the Court of Justice of the European Union has revealed that Antwerp and an unnamed player are challenging the rule of UEFA and the Belgian FA about the need to have eight home grown players registered to their squad. Antwerp believe that the rule goes against EU law, and the court has also agreed that the rules could go against the freedom of movement for workers within the EU.

Antwerp also argue that the rule around home grown players hinders teams ability to be competitive and hamper their ability to recruit talent. The Court of Justice has now passed this back to the Belgian courts to determine whether or not this is true. Now, the Belgian FA and UEFA will have an opportunity to demonstrate how the rules around the home-grown player requirement does not hinder teams in this way, or infringe upon the freedom of movement under EU law.
