Zulte Waregem bring Guinea-Bissau striker back in from the cold to help faltering promotion push

Zulte Waregem looked odds on to gain automatic promotion a few months ago. The side were rolling in the Belgian second tier under head coach Vincent Euvrard. However, their recent slump in form has seen them drop out of the top two and into the play-offs. As reported by Het Nieuwsblad, this has led the board to act.

Sporting Director Tom Caluwé has been sacked, while Euvrard has been forced to recall a player he sent to the B team back in December. Zinho Gano, who appeared for Guinea-Bissau during the recent AFCON, had a falling out with the head coach that saw him sent away from the first time. Since then the side have only taken eight points from a possible 24. With six games to go, and following a 1-1 draw with bottom side SL16, its not surprising that they have been forced to turn back to Gano.

In just 12 Challenger Pro League games this season, the 30-year-old Gano has scored eight goals in 12 games. Even during their disastrous relegation campaign last season, Gano was good for 12 goals in 20 games. During his time at the club he has scored an impressive 36 goals in 70 games. Clearly the side will be better going forward with Gano in it, and with his contract up in the summer it gives the striker a chance to prove to potential suitors that he is worth investing in.
