PSV’s Xavi Simons and FC Utrecht’s Tasos Douvikas became the joint-highest goalscorers in the Eredivisie this campaign, after fantastic performances on the final day of the season.
On Sunday, Simons scored a brace for PSV in their 2-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar. The 20-year-old opened the scoring just after the hour mark. A PSV counter-attack saw Simons dribble the ball from the halfway line before coolly converting past Mathew Ryan in goal.
In the 84th minute, AZ equalised through Jesper Karlsson, but Xavi Simons stunned the AFAS Stadion in the 7th minute of stoppage time. The youngster netted a superb solo goal in the last few seconds to seal a massive victory for PSV and secure their Champions League status for next season. PSV have finished second in the Eredivisie, below the Champions, Feyenoord and above Ajax. In total, Simons has scored 19 goals this season and provided 8 assists.
Further down the Eredivisie table in seventh place are FC Utrecht. On Sunday, they took on FC Emmen in a five-goal final-day thriller. The game ended 3-2 to Utrecht, with goals from former Swansea defender Mike van der Hoorn, Tasos Douvikas and Nick Viergever. The close-range strike from Douvikas took his tally to 19 goals and four assists this season. The 23-year-old Greek international has had a phenomenal season with Utrecht, who are still in with a chance of qualifying for the Conference League via the playoffs.
