Ajax midfielder Steven Berghuis apologises after video appears to show him punching a fan

Ajax’s Steven Berghuis has apologised after a video circulating on social media shows the 31-year-old punching a fan in front of his side’s team bus. The incident occurred shortly after Ajax’s 3-1 away defeat to FC Twente on Sunday.

In a statement, the former Feyenoord and Watford forward said ‘I regret my actions, I should not have done this. I’m used to it by now but people think they can just shout anything.’ The Netherlands international continued ‘My reaction doesn’t solve anything. I get that. It’s not good, I have an exemplary role as a player of Ajax.’

Berghuis kicked off his career in the FC Twente youth academy. In 2021 he joined Ajax from rivals Feyenoord. Since 2016 Steven Berghuis has won 45 caps for the Netherlands national team. This season he has scored 11 goals in 42 appearances. Having lifted the Eredivisie title last season, Ajax have to settle for a third-place finish this campaign after Sunday’s defeat. Ajax have missed out on a Champions League qualification place for the first time since 2009.
