Mark van Bommel more disappointed with RWDM draw than Barcelona defeat

Following Antwerp’s 0-0 draw with RWDM, the sides head coach Mark van Bommel was left incredibly frustrated. Vincent Janssen missed from the spot twice as the newly promoted side held out for a draw. In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad after the match, the former Dutch international midfielder said ‘This hits harder than the 5-0 against Barcelona. Because normally you just have to win this one. It may sound crazy, because it didn’t look spectacular, but we did really well’.

Antwerp, in fairness to van Bommel, dominated every statistic. They ended the game with 72% of the ball, 2.32xG thanks to the penalties and 14 shots. RWDM only managed one shot on target and an xG of 0.23. The newly promoted side will certainly be happy with their start to the season after a tumultuous pre-season involving now club President John Textor. They have taken 11 points from their opening seven games and sit ninth.

For defending champions Antwerp, they sit in sixth place with three wins, three draws and one defeat from their opening seven games. They are currently five points off of leaders Gent.
