Aboubakary Koita: From no goals in 29 games to top of the charts

At the beginning of the 2023/2024 season, few would have predicted that after eight games Aboubakary Koita would be the Belgian Pro League top scorer. The 25-year-old failed to score a single league goal in 29 appearances for Sint-Truiden last season. This year, however, the winger has been on fine form. In eight games he has scored six goals, including a six minute hat-trick in the derby against Genk.

Remarkably, the Sint-Truiden star needs just two more goals to set a new career best in goals scored during a single season. At the moment, the seven he scored during the 2020/2021 season with then Waasland-Beveren was the best of his career. After not scoring last season, the new lease of life that the player has found under Thorsten Fink has been impressive. The German has clearly given Koita the freedom to express himself, and take shots whenever he wants. In the opening game against Standard Liege Koita’s long range effort proved to be decisive.

Without a striker capable of scoring the goals, the Canaries will certainly be reliant on Koita this season. However, with the creativity of Jarne Steuckers, Mathias Delorge and Ryotaro Ito, he will certainly get plenty of chances to add to his six goals.
