John Textor’s RWDM face Beveren in promotion battle

John Textor, owner of Lyon and Crystal Palace, is also the owner of RWD Molenbeek in Belgium. This weekend, his RWDM side face a promotion battle against Beveren at the Edmon Machtens Stadium. The Brussels based side are currently just a point ahead of their promotion rivals with four games to go. Over the last five games, RWDM have won three, drawn one and lost one, while Beveren are coming into form with five wins from five. RWDM will be looking to Mickaël Biron to fire them towards three points. Biron joined the club from Oostende in the summer and has scored 14 goals this season.

For Beveren, they have the leagues leading scoring in Thierno Barry upfront. The 20-year-old striker has scored an impressive 17 goals for the side this season, having joined the club from FC Sochaux B in the summer of 2022. Despite recently signing the striker to a new deal, Beveren will not be fooled into thinking that the striker won’t move on should they fail to gain promotion. This new contract means they can get the maximum return for the striker, as with only one side gaining promotion the chances of getting into the top flight remain in the balance.

Whoever wins this game will have promotion in their own hands going into the remaining three fixtures of the season. Beveren were relegated from the Belgian Pro League during the 2020/2021 season when they lost to RFC Seraing in the relegation play-offs. RWDM, in its current form, have never been in the top flight of Belgian football. The former RWDM folded in 2002, with the name and Matricle number being revived in 2015 when Standaard Wetteren folded and merged to create RWDM47.

The former RWDM won the league in 1975 and made numerous European appearances during the 1970’s.
