Santiago Giménez: The Mexican Goal Machine Leading Feyenoord to Eredivisie Glory

Currently eight points clear at the top of the table, Feyenoord are flying this season as they continue the pursuit for their first league title since the 2016/2017 season. Arne Slot’s side have been ruthless in front of goal, netting 25 times in their last 10 league matches. 21-year-old striker Santiago Giménez has been the source of seven of those goals, playing a crucial part in Feyenoord’s impressive run.

Giménez was born in Buenos Aires in 2001 but grew up in Mexico, where he kicked off his career playing for Cruz Azul. He scored 21 goals in 105 appearances for the Liga MX side and impressive performances earned him a senior national team debut in 2021. Giménez has since gone on to play 10 times for Mexico, scoring twice. The target man made the move to Feyenoord last summer and has been lighting up De Kuip since the start of the year.

The left footed forward has scored 18 goals and provided four assists in 37 appearances across all competitions this season. As well as helping his side reach the top spot in the Eredivisie, Giménez has been an important part of Feyenoord’s Europa Conference League campaign. Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma are their Conference League quarter-final opponents.

With six league games left to go before the end of the season, Feyenoord’s top goal scorer will be looking to add to his tally. His physical presence and brilliant control of the ball are two desirable traits in a striker. If Giménez continues his impressive form there’s no doubt that some of the biggest clubs in Europe will make a move for the Mexican. Giménez is said to be on Manchester United’s shortlist of potential strikers.
