Celtic and Watford interested in FC Volendam and former Chelsea defender Xavier Mbuyamba

According to Sky Sports, Scottish Champions Celtic and Championship side Watford are among the clubs interested in FC Volendam defender Xavier Mbuyamba.

Mbuyamba has played a crucial part in FC Volendam’s success this season. Standing at 6ft 5in tall, the 21-year-old centre-back has featured 26 times in the Eredivisie this season. His height has helped him rack up five goals this campaign, including a headed brace in a 2-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam. Volendam currently sit 14th in the Eredivisie having spent the previous 13 seasons stuck in the second tier.

It comes as no surprise that top clubs are tracking Mbuyamba. Just last year the youngster was released by Chelsea’s academy, and now he’s being compared to Virgil van Dijk by coaches and media in the Netherlands. Van Dijk’s career started at FC Groningen before he made the move to Celtic. Now the Dutch defender is playing under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and is considered to be one of the best defenders in the world.

It’s very possible Mbuyamba could follow a similar path to Van Dijk. If Celtic make a move for the defender this summer, supporters of this season’s Scottish Champions should be excited. Ajax, AZ and PSV are also among the teams monitoring Mbuyamba.
