Aston Villa interested in Paul Onuachu ahead of January transfer window

Voetbalkrant are reporting that Aston Villa are interested in Genk’s top scorer Paul Onuachu. Despite missing three games this season and having to come off the bench while recovering form injury, the Nigerian striker has scored 13 goals in 14 games, the most in the Belgian Pro League.

Two seasons ago Onuachu set the record for the most goals in a single season in Belgium with 35 goals in 41 games. Despite major interest from clubs outside of Belgium, Onuachu has remained with Genk. The club are keen to keep the striker given their current league position and potential title chances.

Despite losing key players in Junya Ito, Theo Bongonda, Jhon Lucumi and Kristian Thorstvedt in the summer, Genk under their new manager Wouter Vrancken are currently top of the Pro League having lost just one game. This start to the season has led some to call for Vrancken to become the new Red Devils head coach.

Onuachu would not be the first striker Aston Villa have signed from Genk, with Mbwana Samatta making the move to the midlands back in January of 2020. Samatta is now back at Genk on loan from Fenerbahce.
