KV Mechelen kept in contention to win play-off two and have a chance of European qualification after a comeback win over Westerlo on Saturday afternoon. They were indebted to the display of Nikola Storm, who was brought off the bench at half-time to help lead the comeback.
Westerlo, who have little to play for to end this season, took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Costa Rican teenager Josimar Alcocer and young Belgian forward Romeo Vermant. The latter’s afternoon got a lot worse just 10 minutes later as he picked up two yellow cards and was sent off.
Besnik Hasi rang the changes at half-time, with Storm being introduced. Once linked with multiple clubs and big money move, the winger has had to contend with injuries this season that have curtailed his opportunities. After Elias Coubbaut made it 2-1 in the 56th minute, Storm provided the assist for veteran Algerian striker Islam Slimani to make it 2-2 just after the hour mark.
With time running down, Storm’s well struck cross was diverted into his own net by Turkish defender Ravil Tagir to complete a comeback win for the home side. Mechelen remain in second place in the play-offs, a point behind Gent who face OH Leuven on Sunday afternoon.
