Zinho Gano comes off the bench to keep Guina-Bissau’s AFCON dream alive

Zulte-Waregem striker Zinho Gano was the hero for Guinea-Bissau as they beat Sao Tome and Principe 1-0 yesterday to keep their AFCON qualification hopes alive. Gano came on at half-time and scored the only goal of the game after 55 minutes as he tapped in after Albertino Chum had spilled a shot. The striker has now scored three goals in three appearances for the country.

Guinea-Bissau now sit top of their group, one point ahead of Nigeria who face Sierra Leone. Should the Super Eagles win, then Gano and co will be through to the finals in Cote d’Iviore regardless of their result against Sierra Leone in the final group match. However, if the Leone Stars beat Nigeria then Guinea-Bissau will need a win over Sierra Leone.

Gano’s future in Belgium is uncertain. He remains under contract with Zulte Waregem after their relegation until 2024, but his 12 goals in 20 games may bring interest from elsewhere.
