Wout Faes speaks on replacing Toby Alderweireld and Domenico Tedesco’s tactics

Leicester City central defender Wout Faes has indicated his desire to take the place of the now retired Toby Alderweireld. Speaking to the media, and reported by HLN. Faes was asked on his thoughts on a defensive opening with the former Tottenham defenders retirement. The former Oostende man said ‘I’m going to give myself completely. I also feel really ready to take this opportunity’.

Faes will be competing with Artur Theate, Zeno Debast and Sebastian Bournow, all of whom were included in Domenico Tedesco’s first squad. The 24-year-old former Oostende defender left Belgium permanently in June 2020 to join Reims in France. It took just two years in France for Faes to impress Leicester, who spent around €17m on the defender in the summer.

Faes was included in Belgium’s Qatar 2022 World Cup squad, but like other’s in the final selection he did not feature at all under Roberto Martinez. With Tedesco now in place, and the retirement of Alderweireld, Faes was clearly seeing the new direction the side is going in as an opportunity for him. The defender believes that the style of play Tedesco wants to implement will also suit him. ‘The first meeting with the new national coach was spontaneous and relaxed. It wasn’t much about football yet, but in a meeting he already showed us some of his principles. They are based on playing high with a lot of aggressiveness. That suits me‘.
