Willem van Hanegem feels AZ’s Jordy Clasie is good enough to play for the Netherlands

Willem van Hanegem believes that AZ midfielder Jordy Clasie is good enough to play for the Netherlands.

Clasie represented his country at the 2014 World Cup as an exciting young talent but his career didn’t take off as many had expected it would after that with him initially impressing in the Premier League for Southampton but then being sent out on loan to Club Brugge and Feyenoord after falling down the pecking order at the English club.

While he hasn’t played at the top level of club football as many once imagined he would though, he has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Eredivisie since joining AZ permanently in 2019.

His performances there saw him return to the Oranje squad earlier this year, and while he wasn’t included in the latest selection, there’s still a chance he goes to the World Cup.

Having been impressed by his display against Ajax in AZ’s 2-1 victory, Van Hanegem thinks he’s good enough to be in Louis van Gaal’s side.

“The Jordy Clasie that I saw again would not be out of place in the selection of Oranje,” he said in his column for AD.
