Thomas Verheydt’s (33) Willem II move looks a possibility after his contract with Çorum FK in Turkey expired this summer. The Brabants Dagblad reported on the Tilburg club’s interest, and this has now been confirmed by club insiders, according to Voetbal International.
ADO Den Haag were also mentioned, but Verheydt’s former employer is said to be profiling a different type of striker. This means that Willem II are the main candidate to take the cult hero. The Tricolores see Verheydt as the replacement for Jeremy Bokila, who left on a free transfer earlier this summer.
Willem II announced the arrival of Devin Haen from Feyenoord last week, and while Haen starts as the first striker, the more physical Verheydt can serve as a battering ram. There is also the potential for a big man, little man partnership between the two.
Verheydt proved impressive in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie in cult stints with MVV Maastricht, Go Ahead Eagles, Almere City and ADO. In between, he played a year at Crawley Town (League Two). In the last two seasons, he was under contract with Çorum in the second tier of Turkish football.
John Stegeman, the new trainer of Willem II, knows Verheydt from their time together at Go Ahead Eagles. If Willem II make progress in negotiations, the striker can prepare for a remarkable debut, as the Tilburgers visit ADO Den Haag in the first round of the season.
