West Ham reach verbal agreement with Ajax to sign Edson Álvarez for around £35m

According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham have reached a verbal agreement with Ajax to sign Edson Álvarez. The Hammers will pay around £35m for the 25-year-old Mexican midfielder. Álvarez will fly to London in the next 24 hours to undergo his medical and sign the contract. Personal terms between the club and the player were agreed last Friday.

Álvarez has been in the interest of West Ham for months and finally, they’re nearing the completion of the signing. After selling Declan Rice to Arsenal for a club-record fee of £105m, the Hammers have been searching for a suitable replacement. Edson Álvarez is their top target, and now all that’s left to complete is paperwork and the player’s medical.

Edson Álvarez can play as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back. Last season the 69-time Mexico international featured 44 times in all competitions for Ajax, who finished the Eredivisie campaign in third place. He joined the Dutch giants from Club América in the summer of 2019 and has been one of their standout players ever since he joined. This could be an excellent addition for West Ham.

Ajax look set to lose both Álvarez and their attacking midfielder Mohamed Kudus this summer. On Saturday, Brighton & Hove Albion reached an agreement to sign the Ghana international for €40m. Ajax have already let go of nine players during this transfer window and now they look set to lose another two crucial first-team players.
