Virgil Van Dijk dismisses Marco Van Basten’s criticism over World Cup performances

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has dismissed criticism from Marco van Basten after Oranje produced yet another underwhelming performance during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, NOS reports.

Former Netherlands boss Van Basten criticised the Liverpool defender’s performances so far in Qatar while acting as a pundit on the Dutch media company shortly after Louis van Gaal’s side dropped two points against Ecuador which ended 1-1.

Van Dijk himself responded to Van Basten’s criticism straight after the match at the Khalifa International Stadium shortly after a disappointing draw against La Tri.

The defender said: “He is never positive in my opinion, so what do you have to do with it?

“It’s easy to make an analysis from Hilversum. I don’t want to say I played a fantastic game, not at all. But the things being said about me failing as captain: what to do with that? I’m always up front, I lead the team in the best way possible.”

Netherlands can secure a place in the round of 16 with a win against Qatar.
