Victor Boniface grabs 16th goal of the season as Union St Gilloise reignite title challenge

Union St Gilloise overcame Club Brugge 2-1 at the Jan Breydel to reignite their title challenge. Victor Boniface grabbed his 16th goal of the season just before half-time, with Jean Thierry Lazare scoring just after half-time to make it 2-0 to Union. Hans Vanaken pulled one back in the 93rd minute for the defending champions, however they couldn’t find an equaliser. While their chances of retaining their title was a long shot before the game, this result now confirms that Club Brugge will not be able to win the league.

For Union, after their 2-0 defeat to Antwerp in the opening game of the play-offs, Union needed a win to have any chance of challenging Genk and Antwerp for the title. Ahead of Genk’s game with Antwerp on Sunday, Union are now level on points with Genk.

The Brussels based side will now face Genk back to back in their next two play-off games.
