Van Bronckhorst? Van Bommel? NEC Nijmegen’s list of potential managers turns heads

On Thursday, it was reported that NEC Nijmegen and Rogier Meijer will not be renewing their partnership. The rumour mill has begun to turn in the wake of this news, with some intriguing names arising on the 13th-placed Eredivisie side’s radar.

NEC sees Mark van Bommel as the ideal successor to Meijer, but the club from Nijmegen still has two big names for trainers on the list in case the former player turns down the position. According to Voetbal International, both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Dick Schreuder are ‘interesting’ options.

VI reported on Thursday evening that NEC has approached Van Bommel for the position in Nijmegen after Meijer’s departure, but it is far from certain that the former PSV and Royal Antwerp coach will say yes. According to the outlet, “NEC are aiming high by putting the former PSV, VfL Wolfsburg and Antwerp FC coach at the top of the list”.

In addition to Van Bommel, Van Bronckhorst is also considered a possibility. The former Feyenoord coach has worked with Fred Rutten in the past, who currently serves as an advisor to the supervisory board at NEC.

Where Van Bronckhorst’s reputation is solid with Feyenoord, Schreuder’s record is somewhat less impressive. The trainer has been without a club since January after leaving Castellón. Before that, the Dutchman was active at PEC Zwolle, Vitesse, TSG Hoffenheim and Philadelphia. However, he worked as an assistant trainer at the last three clubs.
