Utrecht prospect chooses Indonesia: โ€˜Qualifying for the World Cup is the ultimate goalโ€™

Miliano Jonathans has chosen to represent the Indonesian national team. The 21-year-old Arnhem-born winger has previously been called up to Dutch youth teams, but has now opted for Garuda.

Jonathans indicated that his decision came from the heart. โ€œI made the international decision to play for Indonesia. Itโ€™s a whole new adventure for me, and I canโ€™t wait to get started. I mainly talked about it with my parents. Of course, also with people close to me. Ultimately, I just feel strongly about Indonesia, and thatโ€™s why I made the decision.โ€

Jonathans has Indonesian heritage from his paternal grandmother, who is from Depok, West Java. The youngster has also spoken with national coach Patrick Kluivert. โ€œIโ€™ve been in touch with him. We had a quick phone call and mainly talked about playing style and things like that. Iโ€™m really looking forward to it and I canโ€™t wait.โ€

Indonesia have an ambitious set-up, with qualification to their first World Cup the main target. Speaking of this, Jonathans made it clear he wants to help make history.

โ€œYes, thatโ€™s the goal. We have World Cup qualifiers in October, which are two matches. Weโ€™re hoping for the best, of course. That would be fantastic, because I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s ever happened before.โ€
