Union St Gilloise v Club Brugge Preview | Ronny Deila can ill afford to slip up in Belgian Cup semi-final

Club Brugge take a narrow lead into the second leg of their Belgian cup semi-final with Union St Gilloise. After their 2-1 defeat to Anderlecht at the weekend, the side under Rony Deila have very little chance of challenging either Brussels side for the title. As a result, they still have two trophies up for grab, although their chances of winning the domestic cup are arguably far greater than the Europa Conference League. Deila is beggining to come under pressure and can ill afford not to at least make the cup final to bring some silverware back to the trophy cabinet this season.

Union remain the most inform side in the Belgian Pro League. They remain competitive on three fronts, with a healthy lead in the league. Their dramatic win in Frankfurt in the Conference League means they still have a chance of three trophies. Koki Machida’s late goal in Brugge gives them a platform to build on when they host the blue and black half of the Flemish city on Wednesday night. Prior to that goal, Andreas Skov Olsen and Ferran Jutglà had given the hosts the lead.

Over the past two seasons Club have twice denied Union the Pro League title. Rony Deila’s side are looking to win a record 12th domestic cup, while Union are hoping to win their first cup since 1914, which was their second.
