Union St Gilloise face tough trip to Germany in Europa Conference League play-offs

Union St Gilloise were given a tough tie for the next round of the Europa Conference League on Monday afternoon. The leaders of the Belgian Pro League will have to face Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs in February’s round of 16. Union finished third in their Europa League group behind Liverpool and Toulouse, while Eintracht finished second behind PAOK in their Conference League Group.

The German side are currently sitting in eight place in the Bundesliga after a 3-0 defeat to high flying Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. Union will be familiar with a few names in the side who played in the Pro League recently. Former Antwerp defender William Pacho left Belgium for Germany in the summer, while Aurelio Buta also made the same move back in 2022. French defender Niels Nkounkou also spent some time in the Pro League with Standard Liege.

Last season Union beat another Bundesliga side in Union Berlin during the Europa League knock-outs, but were eventually knocked out themselves by the aforementioned Bayer Leverkusen.
