Toby Alderweireld had “no explanation” for poor Antwerp start following 3-0 defeat to Standard Liege

Standard Liege raced into a 3-0 lead at home to Royal Antwerp in under 10 minutes. Goals from William Balikwisha, Denis Dragus and a first ever Pro League goal for 17 year-old Cihan Canak saw Antwerp lose their grip on top spot. Speaking to Eleven Sports at half time, experienced Red Devils defender Toby Alderweireld said “I have no explanation for this dramatic start. We came up short on every level in the first quarter. We were not good enough, not only defensively but also offensively”.

Despite winning their first nine matches in a row, Antwerp are now a point behind leaders Genk, who won 1-0 over OH Leuven on Saturday. Antwerp manager spoke prior to their first defeat of the season about the similarities between the current season and his start as coach of PSV Eindhoven.

Antwerp face Oostende in a midweek clash before a table topping duel with Genk next Sunday.
