Thijs Dallinga scores again as Toulouse pull off shock victory over Liverpool in the Europa League

Toulouse pulled off a shock win against Liverpool on Thursday evening, giving their hopes of Europa League progression a huge boost. The dramatic 3-2 victory saw Dutchman Thijs Dallinga score his sixth goal in his last ten matches for the French Ligue 1 side.

Having lost 5-1 at Anfield two weeks ago, Toulouse’s chances of beating Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool seemed to be very low. The visitors kicked off the game knowing they had the opportunity to seal Europa League knockout football with two group games to spare. The Reds struggled to make an impact in the first half, and eventually, Toulouse broke the deadlock. A terrible mistake from Kostas Tsimikas allowed Aron Dønnum to charge towards goal and fire the French side ahead.

Shortly after the restart former FC Groningen and Excelsior forward Thijs Dallinga made his mark on the game. The 23-year-old drilled in his effort to make it four goals in his last five matches. A brilliant strike across goal, right into the bottom left corner from Thijs Dallinga. Despite sitting 14th in Ligue 1, Toulouse had plenty of energy and confidence on display. Liverpool were gifted a goal in the 74th minute when Cristian Cásseres Jr. turned the ball into his own net.

Substitute Diogo Dalot made it 3-2 in the 89th minute before the drama kicked off in the seventh minute of added time. Jarell Quansah found the back of the net for the visitors in what looked to be the equaliser, but a VAR check deemed that Alexis Mac Allister had touched the ball with his arm in the lead up to the goal. Toulouse claimed all three points in what was a thoroughly entertaining clash.
