โ€˜The composition of the squad isnโ€™t idealโ€™: Former Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen reflects on another Champions League defeat for Ajax

Ajax continued their torrid Champions League campaign with another defeat last night. This time, the Eredivisie side lost 3-0 at home to Galatasaray, with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen helping himself to a hat-trick. Ajax have now lost all four of their Champions League games, with just one goal scored in that time. As a result, Jonny Heitingaโ€™s position as head coach is coming under increasing pressure, although a return for Erik Ten Hag has been shut down despite a meeting with Ajax director Alex Kroes . The club have won just five of their 15 games so far this season and are eight points off the leading two in the Eredivisie.

Ajax captain Davy Klaassen did not hold back after the game. The former Everton midfielder told the attending press that he does not believe Heitinga is the main problem, instead focusing on the players. Klaassen said โ€˜We expected and hoped we would be further along. Weโ€™re all falling short. You win and lose togetherโ€ฆThe composition of the squad isnโ€™t idealโ€˜.

the 32-year-old Klaassen is in his third spell with the club, having been with the club up until 2017 when he moved to the Premier League. After just one dissapointing season with Everton he moved to Werder Bremen for two and a bit seasons before returning to Ajax. After another brief season away, this time with Inter in 2023/2024, Klaassen returned to captain the side. So far he has made well over 300 appearances for Ajax, scoring 103 goals.
