Sunderland interested in Heerenveen midfielder Thom Haye

Sunderland are interested in Heerenveen’s Thom Haye, according to Leeuwarder Courant reporter Sander de Vries. The Dutch midfielder attracted interest from several French clubs last season, following successful spells with AZ Alkmaar, Willem II and NAC Breda. Sunderland are said to be the latest side interested in the 28-year-old.

Haye joined Heerenveen from NAC Breda in January 2022. This season he’s made 27 Eredivisie appearances for the club. Throughout his career, the former Netherlands U21 international has played in a number of different positions. At AZ, where his career kicked off, Haye played as a left winger and central midfielder. At Willem II he played on both wings and as an attacking midfielder. Currently he plays as a defensive midfielder.

Heerenveen are yet to receive an official approach for Haye, but when the summer transfer window opens the Black Cats could be the first team to pounce on a move for the midfielder. Haye’s current contract expires in 2024, which means Sunderland would have to pay a fee in order to bring him to the Stadium of Light. The Championship side are still in with a chance of a return to the Premier League. Currently, Tony Mowbray’s side sit 7th in the table just two points off 6th place Millwall in the play-off spots. A move for Thom Haye could depend on Sunderland’s league status next season.
