Sunderland and Celta Vigo linked Matija Frigan set for Westerlo

Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Matija Frigan is set for Westerlo. Both Sunderland and Celta Vigo were said to be interested in the Croatian attacker, but it appears that Westerlo have beaten both sides to the signing of the 20-year-old. Frigan, a Croatian youth international, scored 14 goals and provided three assists for HNK Riejka last season. Reports are suggesting that the striker could cost Westerlo in the region of €5.5m.

Frigan has a contract with Riejka that runs until 2025, having come through the youth system at the club to graduate into the first team. The 2022/2023 season was the breakout one for Frigan, having spent previous years on loan at a handful of other Croatian sides. He can play as a striker, but also as a winger.

Westerlo have already signed a striker during the summer transfer window, with Irsan Muric coming over from Club Brugge. The Belgian teenager, who is also eligible for Serbia, has signed a three year contract with Westerlo, with an option for a further two years.
