Stoke City set to complete €5m signing of FC Basel and Netherlands youth international midfielder

According to Voetbal International, Stoke City are close to completing the signing of Wouter Burger from FC Basel. The Netherlands U21 international midfielder is set to undergo medical tests ahead of a €5m move to the Championship club. Due to a 20% sell-on clause in the player’s contract, Burger’s former club, Feyenoord, will also benefit from the transfer.

Stoke City made their first offer for Burger nearly a month ago, and now the Potters have actually reached an agreement with FC Basel. The 22-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract, with an option for another season. Burger is set to become Stoke’s 14th signing of the summer, as head coach Alex Neil looks to propel his side up the table after last season’s 16th-place finish.

Wouter Burger kicked off his career with Feyenoord, after rising through the ranks in their youth academy. The central midfielder featured 16 times for Feyenoord’s first team, whilst also experiencing loan spells with Sparta Rotterdam and Excelsior. In the summer of 2021 he moved to Swiss side FC Basel, where he’s been a crucial player. Last season, Burger featured 50 times across all competitions as Basel finished fifth in the league and reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League. This could be an excellent signing for Stoke.
