Steven Bergwijn named new captain of Ajax following the departure of Dušan Tadić

Ajax head coach Maurice Steijn has appointed Steven Bergwijn as captain for the new season. The former Tottenham and PSV winger succeeds Dušan Tadić, who was the Ajax captain for many years before he made the move to Fenerbahçe this summer.

Last season was Steven Bergwijn’s Debut season at Ajax. The 25-year-old left-winger scored 16 goals and provided six assists in 45 appearances for the Amsterdam club. Bergwijn wore the captain’s armband during Ajax’s preseason game against FC Augsburg. During Ajax’s final preseason friendly, with Borussia Dortmund last Sunday, Davy Klaassen was the captain. Klaassen’s future at the club is still unclear.

This Saturday, Ajax kick off their Eredivisie campaign against Heracles Almelo. After last season’s disappointment, the Dutch giants are looking to challenge for the title once again. However, having let go of nine players already this summer, with Edson Álvarez close to the exit door, things are already looking tricky heading into the new campaign.
