Standard Liege will not take up purchase option on former Leicester City youngster

Loïc Woos is reporting that Standard Liege will not be taking up the purchase option of around €3m for Ghana winger Kamal Sowah. The former Leicester City youngster joined the side on loan from Club Brugge in the summer, with then head coach Carl Hoefkens’ hoping to get the best out of the 24-year-old.

However, with Hoefkens having left, new head coach Ivan Leko has kept faith with Sowah over the past handful of games. Yet with the clubs finances in an unhealthy position and Sowah having not been able to replicate previous good form, it is understandable that the side have opted against the purchase. Sowah has played 20 games for the side in the Pro League this season, scoring two goals.

Sowah will now return to Club Brugge in the summer with a year remaining on his contract. He has spent most of his past few seasons with the side out on loan, either with AZ Alkmaar or Standard Liege.
