Standard Liege interested in signing former long-time Watford defender

Sacha Tavolieri is reporting that Standard Liege are eyeing a move for former Watford defender Christian Kabasele. The 33-year-old central defender played for Udinese last season and is under contract with the Serie A club until 2025. However, the Belgian defender, born in the DR Congo, only made 14 appearances for the side last season. Tavolieri is reporting that the players wages and transfer fee could prove a stumbling block for cash-strapped Standard.

Kabasele, who played for both Genk and Eupen in the Pro League, had his best spell during a long period with Watford. The defender played in both the Premier League and the Championship for the Hornets over a span of six years. He made 166 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals. The defender was also capped twice by the Belgian national team and played for a number of the Belgian youth sides.

Despite their lack of finances, Standard are hoping to make a few new signings this summer to revamp their squad. Some higher earners like Moussa Djenepo will be sold as a means to bring new players in.
