Standard Liege defender refuses to be part of selection to avoid ruining transfer to other Belgian side

Sacha Tavolieri is reporting that Standard Liege defender Gilles Dewaele refused to be part of the selection for the game against Gent. The former Kortrijk defender has interest from Westerlo and does not want to ruin his chances of a move this summer by suffering an injury. Standard lost 4-1 to Gent at home as their terrible end to the season continues. The 28-year-old Dewaele still has one year on his contract with the club.

Dewaele joined the side from Kortrijk in January of 2022. Prior to joining Kortrijk the defender had been with Westerlo, so he looks set to go back for a second spell with the club. The right-back, who can also play as a wing-back, has made 45 appearances for Standard in his few years there. During his time with Westerlo the defender made 95 appearances, mainly in the second tier of Belgian football.

Standard are set for a big summer of change, with owners 777 set to leave and plenty of players looking to move on.
