SK Beveren heap more misery on Westerlo with Belgian Cup victory

Second tier side SK Beveren comfortably beat Westerlo in the Belgian Cup round of 32. The side bottom of the Pro League were beaten 3-1 away at the Freetheil. Within five minutes the Challenger Pro League side were ahead through Sander Coopman. Around 41 minutes later David Hrncar made it 2-0 to put Westerlo in trouble of suffering a cupset.

The game was over after 79 minutes when Goduine Koyalipou scored from the spot to all but confirm Beveren’s path to the next round. Nicolas Madsen did get one back from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, but Westerlo could not stage a comeback.

While losing to a second tier side is not ideal for Westerlo, their position in the Pro League means that they need to focus more on the league than on the domestic cup. The side have only won once in 12 games this season, with four draws and seven defeats. They are already six points adrift from definite safety, with the bottom four in the top flight set to battle it out to avoid the drop at the end of the season.
