In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, Sint-Truiden head coach Thorsten Fink revealed that three unnamed top sides from the Bundesliga have asked him about 19-year-old Matte Smets. The teenage defender is having his breakout season for the Canaries this season, starting all 11 games in the sides back three. He is already on course to match the amount of games (12) he started last season.
Smets is a modern central defender in that he is comfortable with the ball at his feet. So far this season, he has an incredible 92% passing accuracy, completing 739 passes. He has played every minute for the club this season and is trusted by Fink as part of the new look defence. Smets typifies the change in style under Fink, from a more defensive outlook last season to a side that want to have the ball and move it quickly.
Fans of the club have been calling for more playing time for players from the sides academy, and Fink has been willing to do this. As the season progresses, expect more clubs alongside those from Germany to show interest in the teenage defender.
