Signs of life at Ajax: Three wins on the bounce show progress for Fred Grim

Ajax were grateful to three late goals to overcome Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. It means that the Eredivisie side finally have a first win in the competition, even if it likely comes too late to make it through to the next round. Yet for interim head coach Fred Grim, it shows that perhaps progress is being made at Ajax. The side won in the Eredivisie at the weekend and have followed it up with another victory here. Speaking to the press after the game, Grim said โ€˜Weโ€™re making progressโ€˜ before continuing to say โ€˜Weโ€™ve seen flashes of the combination play weโ€™d like to see at Ajaxโ€˜.

Ajax have now put together a run of three wins in a row, starting with the postponed game against Groningen. In that time they have scored nine goals and conceded three. Grim admitted that he is still concerned about how the side are defending, but going forward they are looking better. It has certainly helped having former Anderlecht striker Kasper Dolberg fit again. The Danish forward is in his second spell with Ajax and with Wout Weghorst out until after the winter break, his return to form will be crucial. Dolberg scored his second goal in eight games for Ajax and the fans of the club will be hoping he can really kick on now. Last season Dolberg scored 24 goals in 45 games for Anderlecht who were reluctant to see him leave for Ajax, but their lack of European football meant they were forced to sell the talented Dane.
