Should Belgium take Ajax breakout talent Mika Godts to the 2026 World Cup?

Mika Godts is having a real breakout season for Ajax. The 20-year-old Belgian forward has scored 13 goals in the Eredivisie and provided his side with 10 assists across 32 games in all competitions. As a result, Godts leads the Eredivisie in combined goals and assists. The former Genk man is in his third season with Ajax since departing Belgium and it appears that the once highly rated prospect is starting to come into his own.

Last season Godts played 47 games for Ajax, scoring eight goals and providing six assists. He has clearly taken another step in his development at the club, despite their struggles to start the season. Under Fred Grim, Godts has scored five goals in his last five games. Ajax havenโ€™t won all these games, but for Godts it is certainly getting him noticed beyond the Eredivisie.

One quesiton many will be asking is whether or not Godts will be on his way to the 2026 World Cup. The Belgian Red Devils head to the tournament without any real expectations. Once the perennial dark horses thanks to the so called โ€˜Golden Generationโ€™, the transition to a new generation has seen the side struggle at recent tournaments. Rudi Garcia is under some pressure but his side should have enough to escape from a group containing Egypt, Iran and New Zealand.

There is plenty of talent in the youth ranks of Belgium. Godts is just one example, and it could be beneficial for both the Ajax man and the Red Devils to get him involved early. Tournament experience is invaluable and his form surely merits his place on the plane. If Godts isnโ€™t there in 2026, his current trajectory suggests he will be in the squad if the side make it to the 2028 Euros. Whether he is still with Ajax at that point depends on how he continues to develop in Amsterdam.
