Senegalese youngster Pape Demba Diop has been a highly regarded young talent for some time now. His performances at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2023 raised eyebrows as he was a major factor in their triumph. This year, he has really started to come of age in the Belgian second tier. He has become an integral part of Zulte Waregem’s success as they look set to return to the top flight at the second time of asking.
In 21 league games this season, Diop has scored five goals and provided six assists. The side are top of the league by two points with a game in hand on second place RWDM. More importantly, they are seven points ahead of third place, with the top two being promoted automatically. Just seven games remain for the side to secure promotion to the Pro League.
Diop’s natural ability and eye for the spectacular was also highlighted by his incredible goal against Beveren earlier in the season.

Diop will certainly be a factor in them doing just that. The midfielder has a creative spark and has shown he can score goals. It will be interesting to see if the side can keep him next year and how well he will adjust to a league with more quality. Diop will already be on the radar of a number of clubs, so this summer may see the side receive offers for his signature. With a contract running until 2028, there is no need for the side to sell. For Diop, there is no reason to leave just yet. If he can prove himself at the highest level in Belgian football, there will be plenty of suitors come the summer of 2026.
