Schalke 04 have completed the signing of Derry Murkin from FC Volendam. The English left-back has signed a three-year contract at the Veltins-Arena following four-and-a-half successful seasons in the Netherlands.
Murkin has joined a Schalke side who are currently playing in the 2. Bundesliga. The club are aiming to achieve promotion straight back up to the Bundesliga after last season’s relegation from the top flight. Murkin will wear the number five shirt for Schalke, in what will be the 24-year-old’s first season of professional football outside of the Netherlands.
Born in Colchester, Derry Murkin moved to the Netherlands with his family at the age of four. After playing youth football with several Dutch sides, Murkin was picked up by FC Volendam’s academy. Having scored 15 goals for Jong Volendam, Murkin made his first team debut in January 2019. The versatile full-back has since featured 97 times for the Eredivisie club, scoring nine goals and providing 23 assists. This could be an excellent signing for Schalke, as they’ve signed a player with plenty of passion potential.
