Sander Westerveld: Jasper Cillessen ‘by far the best Dutch goalkeeper’

Former Netherlands international Sander Westerveld says that Jasper Cillessen is “by far” the best goalkeeper the Netherlands have.

Cillessen has been hugely impressive since returning to the Netherlands to play for NEC, and with Justin Bijlow struggling at Feyenoord, now looks likely to play at the World Cup.

Westerveld, who was a goalkeeper himself, thinks that would be the correct call from Louis van Gaal, saying the 33-year-old is the best option given his talent and experience.

“[He is] by far the best Dutch goalkeeper at the moment,” he told ESPN.

“The form in which Cillessen is in, with his experience with the Dutch national team and playing at a World Cup, makes him clearly number one for me.

“Experience in the Eredivisie cannot be compared with, for example, a semi-final against Argentina. Only he has that. If you see how he is keeping, he is really in top form. He can play football well, so he really is the complete picture.”
