Ruud Vormer wants to see Martin de Roon marking Lionel Messi; “He will follow him into the shower”

Speaking in his role as an analyst with Het Nieuwsblad, Club Brugge midfielder Ruud Vormer believes that Louis Van Gaal should pick Martin de Roon against Argentina and ask him to mark Lionel Messi. Vomer said “De Roon is a very task-oriented player. Ask him to follow Messi, and he will follow him, even into the shower if necessary”. De Roon has only started two games at the World Cup so far, playing 83 minutes against Qatar and only the first half against the United States.

After their 3-1 victory over the United States, Oranje will be up against one of the favourites in Argentina. Messi put in another vintage performance as Argentina overcame a resilient Australian side 2-1. The winner of this quarter-final has a potential semi-final tie with Brazil, depending if they can overcome South Korea. If they do manage to win their round of 16 fixture, Brazil will face either Japan or Croatia.

Dutch manager Van Gaal has recently been linked with the now vacant Belgium job, following the departure of Roberto Martinez after 6 years in charge. The former Barcelona and Manchester United manager did not outright dismiss the possibility of him crossing the border and taking charge of the Red Devils after his contract with the Oranje ends after the World Cup.
